THE FROGS

Athens needs a new play, but the only people fit to write it are dead. It’s an impossible dilemma for most producers, but Dionysus isn’t most producers; he’s the bold and bumbling god of theater himself! Venturing down to the underworld with his sidekick, the doubting Xanthias, Dionysus immediately gets more than he bargained for—mistaken identities, vicious monsters, fickle gods, and feuding playwrights, not to mention the titular singing amphibians.

Andrew Biliter’s lively new adaptation keeps the comedy relevant and the storytelling loose while including all the major plot points of Aristophanes’ metatheatrical masterpiece. For all its focus on great tragedy, this Frogs secretly asks another question: can a comedy change the world?
